The Art of Designing Domino Sets

Domino, also known as dominoes or dominations, are small rectangular blocks that can be used to play a variety of games. They have an identity-bearing side with an arrangement of spots resembling those on dice and a blank or identically patterned other side. The most common set of dominoes, called a double-six set, contains 28 tiles. Larger sets, such as double-nine, are available for games with more than one player. Each progressively larger set increases the number of ends with dots and the maximum number of tiles that can be connected by a single end.

The popularity of dominoes is due to their versatility, ease of use, and entertainment value. They are often used in education to demonstrate concepts such as probability, patterning, and sequencing. They are also a valuable tool for promoting social skills, such as turn-taking and conflict resolution. They can also be used to encourage physical activity and develop motor skills.

As a child, Stephen Morris was mesmerized by the sight of a line of dominoes falling. He went on to study engineering and design, eventually earning a Ph.D in mechanical engineering. He now creates stunning domino setups that are mesmerizing to behold. He follows a version of the engineering-design process when creating these mind-blowing creations.

He begins with a theme or purpose for the piece and brainstorms images or words that would be appropriate. Next, he considers the materials he would like to use. Many traditional domino sets are made from bone, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory, or a dark hardwood such as ebony. They may be painted or inlaid with contrasting dots. More recently, some sets have been made from other natural materials, including marble, granite, soapstone, and other types of stone; metals, such as brass or pewter; ceramic clay; and crystal.

Each domino has a certain amount of potential energy, which is its tendency to resist motion until an outside force is applied to it. When a domino is knocked over, much of its potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which provides the push needed to move the next domino. This energy travels from domino to domino until the last one falls.

While some learning challenges impact students like falling dominoes, others are more subtle. For example, some students might compensate for a weakness by using other skills, which can cause them to fall down the wrong path. Over time, this can prevent them from acquiring the necessary skills to be successful.

Some teachers use the term domino theory to describe a pattern of student behaviors that leads to academic failure. Students can become overwhelmed with the amount of information they are required to learn, leading them to act in ways that negatively impact their own learning and those of other students. In addition, the fear of making a mistake or getting caught can cause students to avoid learning, which can further compound their problems. This cycle can be difficult to break, but it is possible with the right support.
